The Meat Shed: Always Evolving

March 12, 2024

We opened our self-serve farm store 25 years ago on the farm.  It started with a small shed, and a single chest freezer.  We kept an envelope inside the freezer where our customers would leave their payment for their meats.

As the need to find more people caring to know the story behind their food grew, so did the need to venture away from the farm.  We traveled to farmers markets daily.  Our little farm store closed its doors, while we spent more and more time on the road.

In 2019, my husband and I purchased the livestock farm from my parents, and it became my home again.  I had three children of my own, and was spending more time back at the farm. It was one of my goals to get the self-serve store back up and running for our customers.

The shed needed some serious TLC: a new deck, siding, walls, freezers, signage and more.  My father spent most of his time building and making repairs on the shed, always seeing and realizing my vision thoughtfully.  My mother has an incredible knack for art and makes anything beautiful; her artistic touch is solid throughout.

The Meat Shed means a lot to us, it’s a present picture of where we started, capturing our humble beginnings. A dream, a farm, and a small shed; helping us feed our neighbors, trusting one another, and building connections one day at a time.

If you ever find yourself near Cassopolis, MI stop on in to The Meat Shed, open everyday, 10am-7pm. A good variety of our products are stocked daily.  If you are looking for specific items, order through our website for pick-up at the farm and we will put your order in The Meat Shed for you to grab at your convenience.

Thanks again for your interest in our story, and your support of our farm.

Something unexpected one late summer eve...

It started like any other late summer evening, until a phone call shifted our plans in a way we didn’t see coming. Within minutes, we were standing in front of something we hadn’t been looking for but couldn’t ignore. Looking back, a few things had already been moving into place. We just didn’t realize what they were leading toward.

What kids learn without being told...

Some stories take time to come into focus. What feels like a simple moment on the farm slowly reveals something deeper when you step back and see it whole. Renee shares a reflection on family, place, and the quiet ways a legacy is passed down, one small act at a time.
