Bratwurst with Caramelized Onions and Mustard Seed German Potato Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Bratwurst:

- 4 bratwurst sausages

- 4 bratwurst rolls

For the Caramelized Onions:

- 2 large onions, thinly sliced

- 2 tablespoons butter

- 1 tablespoon olive oil

- Salt and pepper to taste

For the Mustard Seed German Potato Salad:

- 4 large potatoes, boiled, peeled, and diced

- 6 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled

- 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth

- 1/4 cup white vinegar

- 2 tablespoons sugar

- 1 small red onion, finely chopped

- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

- 2 tablespoons mustard seeds

- Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

- German mustard

- Pickles (optional)

Instructions:

Prepare the Caramelized Onions:

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté gently, stirring occasionally, until they turn a rich, golden brown color, about 20-25 minutes. Be patient; caramelizing onions takes time.
  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Prepare the Mustard Seed German Potato Salad:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced, cooked potatoes and crumbled bacon.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the chicken or vegetable broth, white vinegar, sugar, and mustard seeds until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Pour the hot liquid over the potatoes and bacon. Toss gently to combine. Add the finely chopped red onion and fresh parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss again to combine.

Grill the Bratwurst:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Grill the bratwurst for about 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
  3. During the last few minutes of grilling, toast the bratwurst rolls on the grill until they are lightly browned.

Build your perfect plate and enjoy! 🍻
